Asphalt shingles are an excellent choice for roofing due to their affordability and durability. However, over time, exposure to weather elements can compromise their waterproofing properties. To safeguard your roof from water damage, you can apply a layer of acrylic asphalt sealant to the shingles. This simple DIY project can be completed in just a few hours, even by those without extensive experience. Follow these step-by-step instructions to add an extra layer of protection to your asphalt shingles.
Step 1: Prepare the Bleach Solution
Fill a sprayer pump with a mixture of 1 part bleach and 3 parts water. This solution will help dissolve any mold, oil, and grease on the shingles.
Step 2: Apply the Bleach Solution
Evenly coat the shingles with the bleach solution. Ensure that the solution covers the entire surface of the shingles.
Step 3: Let the Solution Work
Allow the bleach solution to sit on the shingles for approximately 15 minutes. During this time, it will dissolve any contaminants. Afterward, use a plastic push brush to scrub the shingles gently.
Step 4: Rinse the Shingles
Thoroughly rinse the shingles with water. It’s important to wait until the roof has completely dried before proceeding to the next step.
Step 5: Apply the Sealant
To achieve an even coat, spray the sealant onto the shingles in a thin and uniform manner. Take care to avoid creating puddles. Once the sealant is applied, use a paint roller to gently rub it into the shingles.
Step 6: Allow for Drying Time
The sealant will typically dry within two hours. Once the first coat is dry, you can apply a second coat for added protection. After the second coat, allow the coating to completely dry, which usually takes around two hours.
